How to Book a Gorilla Permit in Uganda 2026
Step-by-step guide to booking Uganda gorilla permits in 2026 — UWA rules, $800 cost, sectors, and how Mwanzo Tours secures permits for you.
Since 2024, foreign non-residents cannot buy Uganda gorilla permits directly from UWA online — you must use a licensed tour operator. This guide is the exact process we follow for 200+ travellers per year, including lead times, sector choice, and what happens if your dates are sold out.
Step 1 — Choose travel dates and sector
Peak season (June–September, December–February): book 3–6 months ahead. Promotional months (April, May, November): often 4–8 weeks may suffice but do not wait — permits still cap at 152/day nationwide.
Pick a Bwindi sector based on fitness and lodge preference — full sector comparison. Buhoma and Ruhija suit moderate fitness; Rushaga and Nkuringo can mean longer hikes with fewer crowds.
Step 2 — Enquire with a licensed operator
Mwanzo Tours is UTB-licensed and AUTO member. We check live UWA availability before quoting — no "available on request" guesswork.
Step 3 — Written quote and deposit
Your quote names: permit inclusion, lodge properties, transport mode (road vs fly-in), AMREF evacuation cover, and Serah Project contribution. 30% deposit secures permits and lodges.
Step 4 — UWA confirmation
You receive UWA booking reference. Permits are non-refundable under UWA policy — we explain this before payment.
If permits are sold out
- Alternate Bwindi sector (different trailhead)
- Adjacent dates ±2 days
- Fly-in routing to save a road day and extend date flexibility
- Mgahinga (16 permits/day) if appropriate for your itinerary
