Uganda vs Rwanda Gorilla Trekking: An Honest 2027 Comparison
Same mountain gorillas, two very different trips. Permit prices, travel time, terrain and what else fits around the trek, so you can choose with clear eyes.
For most travellers, Uganda is the better-value choice for gorilla trekking and Rwanda is the faster one. A Uganda gorilla permit costs $800 per person from 1 January 2027, against $1,500 in Rwanda. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is about two to three hours by road from Kigali. Uganda's Bwindi is further from the international airport, but it sits on a circuit with chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions and the Kazinga Channel. We are a Ugandan operator, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to keep it fair.

Permit cost: the biggest difference
The permit is the single largest line in any gorilla trip. At $800 in Uganda and $1,500 in Rwanda, the gap is $700 per person, or $1,400 for a couple, on the permit alone. For many of our guests that difference pays for a chimpanzee trek and two nights in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
What the permit buys is similar: a guided trek with rangers and trackers, and up to one hour with a habituated gorilla family once you find them. Our Uganda gorilla permit cost guide for 2027 lists every UWA rate, and the booking guide explains how to secure one.
Getting there: Rwanda is closer to its airport
This is Rwanda's real advantage. Volcanoes National Park is a short drive from Kigali, so a two or three day gorilla trip is easy to fit in.
Bwindi is a long way from Entebbe by road. UWA's own route notes give about six hours from Kampala to Kabale, followed by around 120 km of unpaved road through Kanungu to Buhoma. We never put a long transfer on trek day: guests sleep near the trailhead the night before, and we usually break the drive with a stop in Queen Elizabeth or Lake Mburo National Park.
If time is short, fly. UWA says the scheduled flight to the Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, followed by a 4x4 transfer to your lodge. Our 3-Day Fly-in Gorilla Tour is built exactly for this, and the fly-in vs driving guide compares the two.
The trek itself
Both countries protect the same species, the mountain gorilla, and both limit how many people visit each family in a day. In Uganda, each habituated family takes a maximum of eight visitors per day, and rangers keep you at a safe distance.
Bwindi lives up to its name: it is dense, steep rainforest. A trek can take from about one hour to six hours before you reach the family, depending on where they slept. Uganda's four Bwindi sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo) differ in terrain, and we choose the sector with your fitness in mind. Uganda also offers a gorilla habituation experience in the Rushaga sector, a longer visit with a family still getting used to people. Places are limited, and we quote it in writing.

This is where Uganda pulls ahead for anyone with a week or more. On one western circuit you can add:

Choose Uganda if
- You want the lower permit cost and better value overall.
- You have five days or more and want gorillas plus chimpanzees and savannah wildlife.
- You like the idea of a quieter, wilder forest and a small private trip with one guide throughout.
Choose Rwanda if
- You have two or three days and want the shortest possible transfer from an international airport.
- The higher permit fee is not a concern.
If you are short on time but still prefer Uganda, a fly-in trip closes most of the gap. If you have a week, Uganda gives you much more for the money.

Frequently asked questions
Is gorilla trekking cheaper in Uganda or Rwanda?
Uganda. The UWA standard permit is $800 per person from 1 January 2027. Rwanda's permit for foreign visitors was $1,500 when we checked the Rwanda Development Board booking site on 6 October 2026.
Are the gorillas the same in both countries?
Yes. Both countries protect mountain gorillas. Bwindi in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda are different forests, so the terrain and the feel of the trek differ, but the animals are the same species.
Which is better if I only have three days?
Rwanda is quicker to reach from its capital, about two to three hours by road. In Uganda, a fly-in trip to Bwindi makes three days realistic. On the road, Bwindi is a long drive, so we usually break it with a park stop.
Can I see chimpanzees on the same trip?
In Uganda, yes. Kibale National Park, Uganda's main chimpanzee tracking forest, sits on the same western circuit as Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Can I combine Uganda and Rwanda?
