How Difficult Is Gorilla Trekking in Uganda? — Honest Guide by Sector

How hard is gorilla trekking in Uganda? Sector-by-sector difficulty — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo — porters, fitness, and training tips from a 25-year guide.

I have tracked gorillas in every Bwindi sector. The honest answer: gorilla trekking in Uganda is moderate to strenuous for most fit adults — not a casual nature walk, but absolutely achievable with the right sector, porter, and pacing. Here is what "difficult" actually means on the trail.

What makes it hard?

  • Altitude: Bwindi sits at 1,160–2,607 metres — breathlessness is common for sea-level visitors
  • Terrain: Steep ridges, mud, tangled roots, and no marked paths — trackers cut route fresh each morning
  • Duration: Briefing to return can be 3–8 hours; actual gorilla contact is one hour (standard permit)
  • Weather: Rain possible year-round — trails become slippery within minutes

Difficulty by Bwindi sector

SectorTypical difficultyNotes
BuhomaModerateOften shorter hikes; good first-trek choice
RuhijaModerateAltitude higher — cooler, sometimes longer walks
RushagaStrenuousSteep; habituation permits here
NkuringoStrenuousSteep ridge approach — spectacular views, hard climb

Who struggles most?

Guests who underestimate fitness or choose the wrong sector. Knee problems, recent surgery, or fear of heights — tell us before deposit. We route to Buhoma or arrange porter-plus-pacing plans. There is no shame in hiring a porter; I recommend one for every client in Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Who finds it easier than expected?

Regular hikers, trail runners, and trekkers who train lightly for two weeks before travel. The hour with gorillas erases trail memory — every guest I have guided says the forest effort was worth it.

Training tips before you fly

  • Walk hills or stairs 30 minutes, 3× weekly for one month
  • Break in waterproof hiking boots — ankle support matters
  • Pack light day pack; porter carries the rest
