Parents planning a family safari ask about gorilla trekking age limits before anything else — and the answer is strict. Uganda Wildlife Authority applies a minimum age of 15 for every standard gorilla permit and for the four-hour habituation experience. This is not operator policy; rangers turn away under-age trekkers at briefing, with no refund.

Why UWA enforces age 15

Health screening: Trekkers declare respiratory illness — gorillas share 98% DNA and are vulnerable to human viruses
Trail difficulty: Forest hikes run 1–6 hours on steep, muddy terrain unsuitable for young children
Behaviour in the forest: One hour at minimum 7 metres requires calm, quiet compliance — UWA prioritises gorilla welfare
Insurance and liability: Permits are issued to named individuals meeting UWA eligibility

What about 14-year-olds who are fit hikers?

No exceptions have been granted in our experience for standard trekking — do not book a permit assuming a ranger will allow it. If your child turns 15 before trek day, bring passport or birth certificate to briefing.

Upper age limits and seniors
