Uganda safari planning guide
Everything international travellers need before booking gorillas, chimps, and Big Five wildlife.
1. Choose your duration
3–4 days: Gorilla trekking only — ideal for a long weekend add-on from Europe.
7–8 days: Gorillas + chimps + Queen Elizabeth — the classic circuit.
10–14 days: Full Uganda including Murchison Falls, Kidepo, or luxury lodges.
Browse our 30 safari packages or use the safari planner on the homepage.
2. Secure permits early
Gorilla permits are $800 (foreign non-resident, 2026). Chimp permits vary by park. We purchase and hold permits on your behalf once a deposit is received — typically 3–6 months ahead for peak season (June–September).
Read our gorilla permit cost guide and best time to visit.
3. Budget realistically
All-inclusive midrange safaris typically run $400–550 per person per day including transport, lodges, guide, park fees, and one primate permit day. Luxury lodges add 30–50%. Flights Entebbe are separate.
4. Pick your circuit
- Bwindi — mountain gorillas (non-negotiable for most travellers)
- Kibale — chimpanzee tracking
- Queen Elizabeth — tree-climbing lions, Kazinga boat cruise
- Murchison Falls — Nile boat, Big Five game drives
5. Book with a licensed local operator
Mwanzo Tours is 100% Ugandan-owned, UTB-licensed, with AMREF evacuation support and every booking contributing to the Serah Project. We handle permits, lodges, ground transport, and on-trip support — you get a dedicated specialist, not a call centre.
