What the $800 gorilla permit actually buys
Foreign visitors often assume the permit is a "ticket" like a museum entry. It is closer to a regulated conservation levy that funds habituation, anti-poaching, and community revenue sharing — plus your guided forest experience.
- One hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family (standard trek)
- UWA ranger guides, trackers, and park security on the trail
- Pre-trek briefing at sector headquarters (rules, health screening, group assignment)
- Certificate of completion
- Contribution to gorilla conservation and Batwa/community programmes via UWA
Not included: transport to Bwindi or Mgahinga, lodge nights, meals, porter fee ($15–20 tip), tips for guides and trackers, your tour operator's planning and vehicle costs, or travel insurance. Those sit in your wider safari budget.
How sector allocation really works
Uganda's gorilla permits are booked by sector, not by named gorilla family. Bwindi has four sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo — each with different trailheads, lodges, and hike difficulty. When Mwanzo purchases your permit, we buy for a specific sector on a specific date. UWA assigns the actual gorilla family on trek morning based on where trackers located the group overnight, your fitness briefing, and conservation rotation rules.
You cannot guarantee "I want Mubare family in Buhoma" at booking stage. You can guarantee sector, which determines drive time, lodge cluster, and typical hike steepness. That is why we ask about fitness before deposit — see our Bwindi sectors guide by Daniel (25 years on these trails).
What if you don't get the sector you wanted?
Two different situations:
- Before purchase: If Buhoma is sold out on your dates, we propose Rushaga, Ruhija, Nkuringo, or Mgahinga — or adjacent dates ±1–2 days. We never buy a sector without your written approval.
- After purchase: UWA treats permits as non-transferable between sectors and dates except in limited official reschedule cases (see refunds below). If you booked Rushaga expecting an easy hike but did not disclose a mobility limitation, rangers cannot move you to Buhoma on the day — they adapt trail support (porters, pacing) instead.
Honest pre-booking conversation prevents disappointment. Tell us about knee replacements, pregnancy, or children's ages — we route accordingly.
Porter costs — and why you should hire one
Porters are local community members licensed by UWA. Official porter hire is typically $15–20 paid as a cash tip after the trek (not part of the $800 permit). They carry your day pack, help on mud and steep sections, and keep you steady on log crossings.
I advise porters for every client in Rushaga and Nkuringo; even fit hikers benefit in wet season when trails are ankle-deep. Porters are not "luxury" — they are safety and local employment. Mwanzo includes porter coordination in every gorilla trekking quote; you pay the tip direct on trek day.
How many permits exist per day?
Uganda issues roughly 152 standard gorilla trekking permits daily — about 136 across Bwindi's four sectors and 16 at Mgahinga Gorilla NP. Each habituated family accepts a maximum of eight visitors per day. Habituation permits (four hours, $1,500) are separate inventory in Rushaga only.

Refund, reschedule, and cancellation rules
UWA permit policy (summarised — confirm current wording at booking):
- Permits are generally non-refundable once purchased in your name
- Date or sector changes require UWA approval and often attract administrative fees; availability not guaranteed
- Medical cancellation may be considered with official documentation — processed through your tour operator, not directly by travellers
- No-show on trek day forfeits the permit with no refund
- Minimum age 15 years — no exceptions; illness on trek morning may result in exclusion for group safety

Bwindi vs Mgahinga permits
Most travellers book Bwindi (136 permits/day across four sectors). Mgahinga offers 16 permits daily for the Nyakagezi group — one family, stunning Virunga volcano backdrop, often combined with Kigali fly-in routes. Mgahinga suits travellers already visiting Rwanda or wanting a shorter volcano-side trek; Bwindi offers more sector choice and lodge variety.
Standard trek vs habituation experience ($1,500)
Standard permit: one hour with gorillas, eight visitors max. Habituation experience (Rushaga only): up to four hours with a group still being habituated, four visitors max, $1,500. Longer encounter, more hiking, fewer slots — book further ahead. Not suitable for travellers with tight schedules or limited fitness.
Full safari budget beyond the permit
A realistic 3-day gorilla safari from Entebbe often totals $1,500–$2,500 per person mid-range — permit is the largest line but not the only cost.
