Bwindi Gorilla Lodges: Where to Stay in Each Sector

Which Bwindi gorilla lodge should you book? Start with your sector, then match the lodge to your permit, your budget and your legs. A Kampala tour operator explains.

We are Mwanzo Tours, a tour operator in Kampala, and we build gorilla safaris around the lodge as much as around the permit. A good Bwindi gorilla lodge saves you hours of driving on the morning of your trek and gives you somewhere warm to dry out afterwards.

A note before we start: every lodge named below is a factual example of what exists in that sector, checked against the lodge's own website in October 2026. Price bands are given in words only. Naming a lodge does not mean we have any special arrangement with it, and you are not limited to these names. We choose the right lodge for your dates, group size and budget when we quote.

How to choose a Bwindi gorilla lodge

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a big, steep, forested park, and the gorilla trailheads are spread around it. Roads between sectors are slow, so the lodge you pick matters more here than in most safari parks. Four things decide the choice.

1. Your permit sector. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) sells gorilla permits by date and sector, and the family you track is assigned at the morning briefing. Book the lodge in the sector on your permit. A lodge in Ruhija is a poor base if your permit is for Rushaga. This is the main reason to book through a licensed tour operator: we confirm the permit first, then choose the lodge to match. Read our guide to how to book a gorilla permit for 2027 for the steps.

2. Your route. Buhoma and Ruhija suit travellers coming from Queen Elizabeth National Park or Ishasha. Rushaga and Nkuringo suit travellers coming from Kisoro, Lake Bunyonyi or Mgahinga, or those heading on to Rwanda. Coming from Kampala by road, expect a full day of driving whichever sector you choose.

3. Your fitness. Some trails are gentler than others, and the family you meet decides how far you walk. Our guide to how difficult gorilla trekking is in Uganda goes sector by sector. If you want an easier morning, tell us and we will request a suitable sector when we buy your permit, although UWA makes the final allocation.

4. Your budget and style. Bwindi has everything from community-run bandas and camping grounds to small, high-end lodges with private cottages. Style matters more than stars: ask what the lodge is like at 5 pm, when you are tired, muddy and hungry.

Buhoma gorilla lodges

Buhoma is the northern sector and a natural first choice. The trailhead is a short walk or drive from several lodges, and the road from Queen Elizabeth National Park makes it easy to join a gorilla trek to a classic wildlife safari.

  • Bwindi Lodge (volcanoessafaris.com) is a small luxury lodge in Buhoma run by Volcanoes Safaris, with ten bandas and full-board, all-inclusive stays. Price band: top end. It can be reached by road or by a flight into Kihihi airstrip.
  • Mahogany Springs (mahoganysprings.com) is an upmarket lodge in gardens above the Munyanga River. Its own website puts it a five to ten minute walk, or two minutes by vehicle, from the gorilla trekking starting point. Price band: luxury.
  • Ride 4 a Woman (ride4awoman.org) is a community guesthouse on the doorstep of the forest in Buhoma, run as a social enterprise that supports local women. Price band: budget.
  • Buhoma Community Rest Camp (buhomacommunityrestcamp.com) is a community-run camp offering bandas, cottages, dormitory beds and camping, which makes it one of the most practical Bwindi budget choices. Price band: budget to lower mid-range.

See our Bwindi sectors guide for how the four sectors compare on the trail.

Ruhija gorilla lodges

Ruhija is the eastern sector, higher and cooler, with sweeping forest views and a reputation among birders for Albertine Rift specialities. Because the lodges are small, it rewards early booking.

  • Kiho Gorilla Safari Lodge (kihogorillalodge.com) is a small luxury lodge on Bugarama Hill with eleven standalone cottages looking over the forest, all the way to the distant Virunga volcanoes on a clear day. Price band: luxury.
  • Gorilla Mist Camp (gorillamistcamp.com) is a locally owned camp in Ruhija with forest birding on its doorstep. Price band: mid-range.

Rushaga gorilla lodges

Rushaga, in the south, is where UWA runs the gorilla habituation experience, and it has a large choice of habituated gorilla families. If you want the longer four-hour experience, see our gorilla habituation guide (the permit is $1,800 and Rushaga only).

  • Gorilla Safari Lodge (gorillasafarilodge.com) has 21 rooms, each named after a gorilla or gorilla family, and its own website puts it a five minute walk from the Rushaga briefing point. Price band: upper mid-range to luxury.
  • Rushaga Gorilla Lodge (mbzgroup.africa) is run by MBZ Group Africa, with standard rooms and luxury cottages with balconies over the forest. Price band: mid-range.
  • Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge (ichumbi.com) describes itself as about a ten minute walk from Rushaga Gate, with en-suite cottages and forest views. Price band: budget to mid-range.

Nkuringo gorilla lodges

Nkuringo is the south-western sector, set on a ridge with wide views over the forest and the Virunga volcanoes. The terrain is steep, so the trek can be demanding, and the lodges sit on the ridge with the views.

  • Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge (wildplacesafrica.com) has the Nkuringo trailhead directly outside the lodge, according to its operator WildPlaces Africa. It has six one-bedroom stone cottages and two two-bedroom family cottages, each with a fireplace. The land and buildings are owned by the Nkuringo community, and the lodge was built in partnership with the African Wildlife Foundation and the Gorilla Conservation Programme. Price band: top end, full board.
  • Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge (mountaingorillalodge.com) stands on Nteko Ridge in the Nkuringo sector and is part of the Nkuringo Eco Collection. Price band: mid-range.

Luxury Bwindi lodges

If you are searching for luxury lodges in Bwindi National Park, look at three things before price: the walk or transfer to the trailhead, how many rooms the lodge has, and whether the staff can help with porters, laundry and packed lunches on trek day. Porters cost about US$10, paid on the day. Small lodges with ten or fewer rooms, such as Bwindi Lodge in Buhoma and Kiho in Ruhija, give a quiet, private feel. We ask for a written room description in every luxury quote, so you know what you are paying for. For a high-end itinerary built around these lodges, see our 4-day luxury Uganda gorilla safari.

Budget and mid-range Bwindi accommodation

You do not need a luxury lodge to have a great gorilla trek. The gorillas are the same whether you sleep in a stone cottage or a simple banda. Community camps such as Buhoma Community Rest Camp and Ride 4 a Woman keep costs sensible and put money into the villages around the park. Because permits are the largest cost of the trip, a comfortable mid-range lodge usually gives better value than a stretched budget on one luxury night.

If you are watching the budget, also look at the low-season gorilla safari: permits are $600 instead of $800 in April, May and November, and low-season permits cannot be rescheduled.

What about lodge rates?

We do not publish lodge rates in this guide. They change by season, room type and how many people share, and any figure here would soon be wrong. Your Mwanzo quote shows the lodge, the room and the rate, separated from the permit, so you see exactly what you pay for. Permits are bought in your name as soon as your deposit clears. Our permit money protection page explains how. Travel insurance is not included in our quotes, so please arrange your own cover.

How we choose your lodge as a tour operator

When you send us dates, we work in this order:

  1. We check permit availability by sector for your dates.
  2. We buy the permit in your name once your deposit is paid.
  3. We choose a lodge in that sector that fits your group, budget and how much driving you want, and we check the road transfer so your morning briefing is not a rush.

Our shorter gorilla trips include 3 days gorilla trekking in Bwindi, a Bwindi trek with Batwa and Lake Bunyonyi, or a 3-day fly-in gorilla tour. Longer plans are on our Uganda safari packages and Uganda tours pages, and you can read more about the park on our Bwindi destination page.

Frequently asked questions

Which sector of Bwindi is best for a gorilla lodge?

There is no single best sector. Buhoma is the easiest first choice for road access from Queen Elizabeth National Park, Ruhija suits views and birding, Rushaga has a large choice of gorilla families and the habituation experience, and Nkuringo has the most dramatic scenery. The best sector is the one on your permit and on your route.

Can I choose my lodge before I buy a permit?

You can tell us your preference, but permit availability comes first. The lodge must be in the same sector as your permit, so we confirm the permit, then book the lodge.

How far in advance should I book a Bwindi gorilla lodge?

Small lodges can fill early for the dry months. Send us your dates as soon as you know them and we will check lodge and permit availability together.

Are there budget options near Bwindi's trailheads?

Yes. Community-run camps with bandas and camping, such as Buhoma Community Rest Camp, are the main budget choices, and mid-range lodges exist in all four sectors. Ask us for a budget option and we will show you what is available in your sector.

How much does a Bwindi gorilla lodge cost?

Rates depend on season, room type and sharing, so we do not publish them here. They are listed line by line in your Mwanzo quote. The permit is a separate cost of $800 per person, or $600 in the low-season months of April, May and November.

Does the lodge include my gorilla permit and travel insurance?

No. Permits are bought separately through us as your tour operator, and travel insurance is not included, so you arrange your own cover.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate to enter Uganda?

Under the immigration notice of 2 October 2026, a yellow fever certificate is not required to enter Uganda. Rules change, so check our e-visa and health requirements guide before you fly.
