Bwindi Sectors Guide: Buhoma vs Rushaga vs Ruhija vs Nkuringo

Which Bwindi gorilla trekking sector is best? Compare Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, and Nkuringo for fitness, permits, lodges, and drive times.

I have tracked gorillas in every Bwindi sector. This is what I tell travellers before we buy their permit — because the sector determines drive time, hike difficulty, and lodge choice more than any brochure adjective.

Buhoma (north)

Classic first-timer sector. Moderate trails, strong lodge cluster, 8–10 hours from Entebbe. Families include Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura. Best when combining with Queen Elizabeth en route.

Ruhija (east)

Higher altitude, cooler, excellent birding. Often paired with Queen Elizabeth's Kyambura or Ishasha. Fitness: moderate to good.

Rushaga (south)

More families, habituation experience available ($1,500). Longer hikes common. Fewer tourists than Buhoma in my experience.

Nkuringo (south-west)

Steep — reward is dramatic forest views. Lake Mutanda and Kisoro access. I recommend porters here even for fit clients.

Which sector should you request?

Tell us your fitness, dates, and whether you fly or drive. We match permit to sector before deposit — not after.

Frequently asked questions

Which Bwindi sector is easiest?

Buhoma generally has moderate trails. Tell us your fitness level — porters ($15–20) available at all sectors.

Can I choose my gorilla family?

UWA assigns family on trek day based on permit sector. We book the sector; rangers allocate family for conservation balance.

Is Nkuringo worth the hard hike?

For fit travellers who want views and fewer crowds — yes. We advise honestly if Nkuringo suits your group.
